{"id":134,"date":"2014-02-16T21:04:57","date_gmt":"2014-02-16T21:04:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/magnanimous.biz\/news\/?p=134"},"modified":"2020-04-12T01:47:32","modified_gmt":"2020-04-12T01:47:32","slug":"compact-cinema-lens-comparison","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/magnanimousrentals.com\/blogs\/compact-cinema-lens-comparison\/","title":{"rendered":"Compact Cinema Lens Comparison"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"fb-root\"><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">By<\/span> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.productionhub.com\/profiles\/details\/272656\">Jonah Rubash<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">I first checked out the Schneider<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/customer.magnanimousmedia.net\/search\/schneider%20xenon%20ff%20prime\">Xenon FF prime lenses<\/a>\u00a0<span style=\"color: #000000;\">at NAB in 2013.\u00a0 I was impressed by the barrel design, unnoticeable breathing, and their approach of building a cinema lens derived competitor to<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/customer.magnanimousmedia.net\/search\/zeiss%20cp2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Zeiss\u00a0CP2 lenses<\/a> <span style=\"color: #000000;\">and<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/vimeo.com\/54731203\">Canon CN-E prime lenses<\/a><span style=\"color: #000000;\">, which are both adapted from still lenses.\u00a0 However, I didn\u2019t have much of a sense of how they would perform otherwise, so it was difficult to get excited about them.\u00a0 After working with the Schneider<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/vimeo.com\/76202215\">Cine-Xenar III\u2019s with the Epic<\/a><span style=\"color: #000000;\">, I couldn\u2019t wait to get my hands on their siblings, the<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/customer.magnanimousmedia.net\/search\/xenon%20ff%20cinema%20prime\">Xenon FF<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">I hesitate to call the Cine-Xenar IIIs\u00a0\u201ccreamy\u201d only because they somehow manage to smooth out the harshness of 4K &amp; 5K sensors, especially in the skin tones, without losing resolution or clarity. The focus fall-off, low diffraction, consistency, skin tones and contrast were far more appealing then the CP-2s and CN-E lenses, but Cine-Xenar IIIs are far more expensive. I was hoping that the Xenar\u2019s siblings would bring a similar level of performance and when Magnanimous acquired the<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/customer.magnanimousmedia.net\/product\/schneider-xenon-prime-kit--ef\/314\">Xenon FF<\/a> <span style=\"color: #000000;\">primes I found that DNA in a smaller package.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; color: #000000;\">Corey Lillard made some observations after a comparison of the Xenon FFs with their main rivals:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><iframe data-src=\"\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/84089401?color=ffffff\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" frameborder=\"0\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" class=\"lazyload\" data-load-mode=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/vimeo.com\/84089401\">Lens Comparison &#8211; Resolution &#8211; 50mm Schneider Xenon, Canon CN-E, Zeiss CP2, and Canon L &#8211; Magnanimous Media<\/a> from <a href=\"http:\/\/vimeo.com\/magnanimousrentals\">Magnanimous Media<\/a> on <a href=\"https:\/\/vimeo.com\">Vimeo<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; color: #000000;\">Corey notes, \u201cI noticed the Canon L Series lens starting to soften up at F8 while the Zeiss\u00a0and CN-E lenses began softening up around T\/F 11. The Schneider, however, stayed sharper throughout the range when compared to the other 3. Even at T16 it seemed to keep the resolution and contrast at a higher standard than the rest.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; color: #000000;\">While the Zeiss\u00a0and Canon glass may soften up sooner, they remain quite valuable by bringing variety to the fastest growing part of our industry, which is often underserved in optics. The CN-Es add a little more warmth to the midtones while drastically improving image sharpness and contrast when compared to L Series. The Compact primes run on the cool side but provide great contrast and color that play well with many, if not all, cameras on the market today. The Schneiders, however, bring the quality to the next level. --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 178\/178;\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; color: #000000;\">The Canon L-Series glass has 8-blade iris construction, CN-E lenses have 11-blade irises, and both the CP2s and Xenon FF lenses have 14-blade irises.\u00a0 Build quality does contribute to smoother fall-off. The additional blades in the CP2s and Xenon FFs gives them an edge with a slightly more circular <a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bokeh\">bokeh<\/a>, though the Schneiders out of focus areas are smoother.\u00a0 The L-Series have a bit of color bleed in the bokeh.\u00a0 The Schneider\u2019s bokeh is more consistent while the CP2 and CN-E lenses are a bit softer around the edges and are not quite as smooth.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/magnanimousrentals.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/IMG_364868.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-thumbnail wp-image-157 lazyload\" title=\"IMG_364868\" data-src=\"http:\/\/magnanimousrentals.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/IMG_364868-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 150px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 150\/150;\" \/><\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/magnanimousrentals.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/844733.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-thumbnail wp-image-158 lazyload\" title=\"844733\" data-src=\"http:\/\/magnanimousrentals.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/844733-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 150px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 150\/150;\" \/><\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/magnanimousrentals.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/735706.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-thumbnail wp-image-159 lazyload\" title=\"735706\" data-src=\"http:\/\/magnanimousrentals.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/735706-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 150px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 150\/150;\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The CP-2s and CN-Es share a very similar build.\u00a0 Their compressed barrel is quite useful, especially on drones or the new<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/vimeo.com\/80702042\">Freefly Movi<\/a><span style=\"color: #000000;\">, though the compression tends to make for cramped lens control and matte box setups.\u00a0 The CN-E and CP2 lenses do not have entirely consistent barrels across the range, which can complicate lens swaps.\u00a0 The Schneiders have nearly identical barrels and a length more at home on a professional set, making lens swaps more easily negotiable. There is plenty of rod space. Matched focus and iris control mean that your lens control might not even need to move off the teeth.\u00a0 All of the cinema lenses have smooth and quiet operation, which is a big improvement over the noisy, infinitely-turning focus on L-Series lenses.\u00a0 The CN-E and Zeiss, however, are quite tight where as the Xenon FF lenses have resistance comparable to higher end cinema glass.\u00a0 So, the Canon and Zeiss\u00a0glass will make you work a bit harder to pull focus and lens control will need a tad more torque, which could lead to a bit of lens torque depending on your setup.\u00a0 The Schneiders feel far more solid and while the CN-E and CP2 glass is nothing to scoff at, they are a bit lighter and not quite as well constructed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; color: #000000;\">All that being said, I think the Schneiders are better all-around lenses.\u00a0 All other glass should be on the table for their unique characteristics, but I find that the Schneiders play better with everything.
